•It is a technique which involves two or more SQL Server instances and copying of a transaction log file from one SQL Server instance to another. The process of transferring the transaction log files and restoring is automated across the SQL Servers.
As the process result there are two copies of the data on two separate locations. Here’s the following steps:
•Backing up the transaction log file on the primary SQL Server instance
•Copying the transaction log backup file across the network to one or more
secondary SQL Server instances
•Restoring the transaction log backup file on the secondary SQL Server instances
Data Replication
Data Replication
Data Replication
At a high level, replication involves a publisher and subscriber, where the publisher is the primary server and the subscriber is the target server. Replication's main purpose is to copy and distribute data from one database to another.
There are four types of replication
• Snapshot replication
•Transactional replication
•Merge replication
•Peer to Peer replication
DB Clustering
Data Replication
Table Partitioning
Clustering involves at least two servers and is more of a server level high availability option compared to a database level option.
Clustering will allow one physical server to take over the responsibilities of another physical server that has failed.
This is crucial in environments that need close to 100% uptime. When a server's resources fail, the other server will automatically pick up where the failed server left off causing little or no downtime.
The two types of clustering we will discuss are
1. Active/Active and
2. Active/Passive.

Table Partitioning
The data of partitioned tables and indexes is divided into units that may be spread across more than one filegroup in a database or stored in a single filegroup. When multiple files exist in a filegroup, data is spread across files using the proportional fill algorithm.
The data is partitioned horizontally, so that groups of rows are mapped into individual partitions. All partitions of a single index or table must reside in the same database. The table or index is treated as a single logical entity when queries or updates are performed on the data.
Partitioned tables and indexes are available in all service tiers of Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance.
Table partitioning is also available in dedicated SQL pools in Azure Synapse Analytics, with some syntax differences.

It is a new feature shipping with SQL Server 2012 and is an alternative to database mirroring. It uses groups called Availability Groups, which are groups that contain selected databases that will fail over together if a failure should occur. Since Always On is such a new feature there is not a lot of production environment usage yet.
